What is a Canada study visa?

To study in Canada, you need a study permit. Most students call it a study visa or student visa. However, as per the official Canadian immigration website study permit is not a study visa. So, in addition to the study permit, you will also need a visitor visa or an electronic travel authorisation (eTA), which will be issued to you along with the permit. Study permit allows international students to study at designated learning institutions (DLIs) approved by the Canadian government.

Study permit Canada: Quick process

You can apply to Student Direct Stream (SDS) if you want to get the permit quickly and easily. Through this program, most applications are processed within 20 days, while others might take longer. If you complete your biometrics and meet the eligibility criteria, you will swiftly get your visa through this stream. If you do not want to apply through this scheme, you can opt for the Non-SDS option.

·       You are eligible to apply for a study permit if you have an acceptance letter from DLI

·       You should have enough funds to study and stay in Canada. Therefore, the authorities will require proof of funds.

·       You need to be fit, and your official medical test should state the same

·       You will have to produce a letter of explanation detailing your reasons for studying in Canada. Also, please mention that you will uphold your responsibilities as a student.

·       A Guaranteed Investment Certificate orGIC is a Canadian investment for a fixed period with a guaranteed rate of return. It is for international students who wish to study in Canada under the SDS program. As per the Canadian embassy, the recommended amount of a Guaranteed Investment Certificate is CAN $10,000. For Indian students, the amount of GIC is INR 6,01,500.

·       At any point in time, if the authorities require any additional documents, they will communicate the same.

·       If you want to study in Quebec, you will also need a Quebec Acceptance Certificate (CAQ), which the Government of Quebec issues. Please connect with your respective university for guidance.

The fee for a study permit is ~CAD 150, which is ~INR 8,948 as per the current exchange rate.

·       Before applying, ensure all your documents are in place. During the application process, you will have to pay the fees, so keep your debit card/credit card details handy.

·       Visit the official Canadian immigration website to apply online.

·       When you apply online, you should first read the instruction guide in detail. It will familiarise you with the application format so you can avoid mistakes later.

·       You may also be required to attend a visa interview in your home country.
