The Māori culture

Māori is the indigenous people of New Zealand and makeup around 14% of the population. As Te Reo Māori is one of the official languages of this country, you will come across a lot of places with names in Māori. It is an easy language, hence, you can learn a few Māori ways of greeting people to gel easily with the crowd. The Māori culture believes in the philosophy of loving and caring for the natural world and resources. The best place to observe and enjoy this culture is on a marae which is a scared communal meeting place. The place is used for meetings, celebrations, funerals, educational workshops and other important tribal events.

Divya Arora who studies in New Zealand shared her amazing experience during her stay here. “I have always been curious about the various cultures, beliefs and rituals followed by different people across the world. Studying in New Zealand has given me the opportunity to explore and learn about Māori culture. I have a Māori friend who is accustomed to the culture and helped me to be part of it. I was able to spend time on maraes along with him. The people are extremely welcoming and belives in providing great hospitality. I have learned that they share a spiritual connection with the environment. They are taught to love nature and respect the natural world. I also had the chance to learn and perform Kapa Haka (a term for Māori performing arts and it literally means ‘group’ and ‘dance’) which is one the best memories that will cherish throughout my life.

There is a feeling of cultural inclusiveness in my classroom too. Students from different cultural groups work together and respect each other’s views. The faculty members are very supportive. You should participate in class and never feel hesitant to reach out to them for clarifying doubts. They are very approachable and helpful.”
