The Analytical Writing section of the GRE exam evaluates a student’s capacity to think. It assesses your articulation skills and your ability to construct a case for or against a certain subject.  It is also an extremely important section of your GRE and scoring well here can considerably boost your chances of getting into good universities. Keeping this in mind, we have put together 5 simple tips that should help you do well in the AW section of your GRE exam.

Get familiar with the topics

You may think that there is no way of practicing for the AW section as the topics are random. This is true, but you can go through the fields that these topics are taken from. These usually include education, politics, technology, philosophy, arts, and even different cities. Study sample essays on these topics and rather than focusing on the layout, learn how they approach them as a subject.

Don’t cover both sides of the argument

When you are writing your GRE analytical essay, you need to address an issue and give your perspective on it. Some try covering both sides of the argument in order to sound neutral, but this is not an ideal move. You only have time to cover one side of the argument, so focus on making that aspect of the topic strong.

Use the time limit effectively

You get 30 minutes to complete the test, so make the most of it. Take 2 minutes to understand what you are required to do. Use the next 3 minutes to outline your essay and write a thesis statement. Take the next 25 minutes to write your essay and  make sure that  you keep 2 minutes at the end to proofread and edit it..

Be precise

The test analyzes your ability to process thoughts and convert them into a comprehensive essay. So, rather than focusing on creative writing and glossy language, you should focus on making your essay informative and to the point. This will help you score well in your Analytical Writing test section.

Mention the opposing view in your conclusion

A lot of students write excellent essays but get stuck when it comes to the conclusion. For a good conclusion, you can mention the opposing viewpoint at the end of your essay by capturing it in 1 or 2 lines. This helps in successfully reinforcing your own thesis.

With these tips, all that is left for you to do is to start practicing. Keep writing sample essays which is the only way you are going to get better. Once you ace the test, the next step for you will be to figure out the finances for your education. Avanse is always there to back you up with financial support, so get in touch with us and we’ll see to it that you get all the assistance you need.

We hope this article helps you to ace your test.
