In the previous episode of the Student Speak series, we covered Shallu Verma’s academic background, university, course, research mechanism, and reason for choosing Canada. In this episode, we will cover interesting aspects, including the English language proficiency test, GIC, her education loan experience, and invaluable tips.
Key highlights:
Preparing for the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) was challenging as she was working, and her health issues added to the problem. However, this did not deter her from preparing for her English language test. After office, she would pick up her reading scripts, which are easily available on the internet and read them thoroughly. These scripts are similar to ideal answers to practice and are compiled together for students. Many practice tests, also known as mock tests, available online often come with scripts. YouTube has a rich database of audio scripts that you can use to listen and learn.

Furthermore, Shallu’s rapport with her professor helped her a great deal. She connected with her professor for her guidance on how to crack the IELTS exam. Also, she referred to several mock tests to understand the format and get familiar with the questions asked in each section, viz., Listening, Reading, Writing, and Speaking. Her time management skills and hard work eventually helped her pass the IELTS on the first attempt.
Every country will require proof of funds to prove that students have sufficient funds required to stay and study abroad. Canada requires a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC) when applying for a student visa under the Student Direct Stream (SDS) Program. GIC is a type of investment that comes with a fixed rate of return. As per the recent development, from 1 January 2024, you have to deposit CAD 20,635 (the earlier amount required was CAD 10,000) into your GIC account. This amount will stay frozen in your account till you fly to Canada. You have to visit the bank and confirm your identity so the amount can be released.
Shallu got her GIC done and then applied for her student visa. She mentioned that even though some rules related to student visas have changed in Canada, she had a seamless visa application experience. So, aspirants can keep their worries aside and plan their journey to study in Canada. If all your documents are in place, you can have a smooth application experience like she had.

Shallu said that Avanse Financial Services is a well-known education financing institution that is popular among students. Her experience was extremely seamless and quick, which enabled her to achieve her academic aspirations. The easy documentation and transparent education loan procedure amazed her.
She was guided every step of the way, and she received all the support she needed. Team Avanse patiently responded to all her questions and doubts, which built great trust. She was delighted when her student loan was approved within 20 days. She appreciated the flexible repayment options, too. Therefore, she has highly recommended Avanse Financial Services to those looking for an education loan.
Shallu suggested that when you are applying for a student visa, carry only those documents that are important. Authorities hardly have any time to go through the bundle of documents. Therefore, they will check only the essential documents. By giving them the additional documents, you may create confusion and complicate the process.
Coursework should be every student’s priority. If you don’t find the course of your choice in your home country, you should explore international universities, but never settle for anything less than what you want. Studying abroad will expand your academic horizons and develop a global outlook as well. Once you choose to study abroad, opt for the best course.
