In the previous episode, we gained some meaningful insights into Shaikh Muzahimuddin’s academic journey, his reasons to choose the course and domain, study module and more. In this episode, let’s explore his research mechanism, travel and accommodation plans and visa process.

Research mechanism

When asked about the research mechanism, he quickly mentions that his cousins and friends had a major role to play in his choice of course and country. Secondly, his consultant and seniors based overseas brought some deep insights. After consulting them, he proceeded with the online research that enabled him to shortlist the universities. He further narrowed the list of universities based on the rankings, courses and fees. His research directed him towards a feasible study abroad destination – Canada. He referred to some of the student-centric aggregator websites, which capture information about courses and colleges along with institute ranking platforms and official websites of the respective universities.

His travel and accommodation plans

Muzahim says that his visa is still under process. He is allowed to move to Canada 40 days before his course commences, not earlier. He suggests that it is best to travel 10-15 days before the start of the course. In the initial days of his stay, he plans to live with his cousin and then later move to a rented accommodation. A valuable piece of information for those who don’t have friends and family in the host country is that social networking sites such as Facebook, Twitter or Instagram will help you find your accommodation. These sites are buzzing with groups formed by international students living abroad. These groups exclusively post information related to accommodation for both, girls and boys.

Visa application process

According to Muzahim, you must apply for a visa once you have a letter of acceptance (LOA) from your educational institution. He also highlights that it is wise to apply under Student Direct Stream (SDS). Currently, the visa process is delayed due to the spike in visa applications arising from students’ pent-up demands who deferred their study abroad plans last year. Since the last day to join his university is 21st January, he approached their administration, who assured him that they would assist him if his visa was not processed on time. It is always good to keep a plan B ready in case there are some glitches in future. You can also approach a visa consultant, who will guide you through the entire process, from application to documentation.

Furthermore, please bear in mind that in order to get your visa processed under the SDS scheme, it is mandatory to have a Guaranteed Investment Certificate (GIC). Many Canadian banks offer GIC, a form of investment that comes with a guaranteed rate of return for a specific period of time. The bank that offers you the GIC will ensure that your finances are safe in your GIC account, which is basically a savings account. You have to deposit one year’s living expenses in the bank that provides GIC. The amount cannot be accessed until you arrive in Canada. Upon arrival, you will have to furnish valid documents confirming your identity to access your funds. To get more clarification on funds to be transferred, refer to your LOA, which will detail the expenses for the whole year.
