Avanse Financial Services in conversation with Monika Gwalani, who is all set to pursue a Master of Engineering in Engineering Management from the University of Ottawa, Canada. In the last ‘Student Speaks’ blog, we read about her academic journey, a brief review about her institution and course, the reason behind her opting for this field, and her research mechanism for study abroad destination, university and course selection. In this chapter, we will highlight the impact of COVID on Monika’s academic program, her accommodation plans, things to keep in mind before travelling abroad, her way of managing educational expenses and more.
Impact of the Pandemic on Monika’s degree course
The University of Ottawa (uOttawa) informed Monika that due to pandemic, the course would be conducted via a hybrid module – a mix of online & on-campus sessions. Keeping in mind the current scenario, the university communicated that classes from September – December 2021 will be conducted via virtual mode. Once the student’s visa and all other processes are sorted, they can fly to Canada for the in-person sessions. Monika has applied for her visa in the month of May 2021 and is still waiting for the completion of the process. Hence, she will start her sessions digitally for the time being.
Canada was first among the study abroad destinations to welcome students from all over the world. Some of the recent updates for international entry to Canada are:
Please check with your respective universities if they have a COVID-readiness plan. Your entry and stay in Canada will largely depend on Canadian universities. Canada has gone a step ahead to welcome you with many universities offering pick-up and quarantine facilities.
Monika plans to connect with her peers and seniors as soon as she reaches her campus physically. In fact, once she joins her virtual sessions, she will get in touch with her college mates to understand how they plan their way forward once they reach their study abroad destination. She is already in touch with multiple student groups. Monika has connected with few people who will be joining this university. Hence, the peer-to-peer conversation has again helped her to plan for their stay in this new country. Monika is in touch with 3 girls who will be moving to Canada for their higher education. For the initial 7-8 days, they will book an Airbnb apartment. During this period, they will do a house hunt together in the already shortlisted places/properties. Now, this is called planning in advance. Monika also highlights the fact that students should be extremely careful when they are checking properties on different websites. Students previously had been victims of several fraudulent activities. Planning accommodation in advance is a must so that you have a roof over your head when you land in a foreign country.
First and foremost, a student should plan the finances well before travelling abroad, especially during these unprecedented times. Monika highlights the fact that the availability of part-time jobs is currently lesser due to COVID restrictions. Hence, your chances to earn while you learn becomes slightly difficult. You should have enough funds to support yourself during your stay in Canada. Also, with regards to vaccination, Monika faced some challenges in terms of slot booking. She advises students to book slots well in advance so that they can get both doses in a hassle-free manner. Please ensure that you take WHO approved vaccine to avoid unnecessary troubles in the foreign country. Only Covishield from Serum Institute of India has a nod from WHO.
The online class is a new format for Monika. She anticipates that it might be difficult for her initially. But with time, she will be able to learn some of the best techniques to grasp the sessions successfully. She will get extra time as she will not be travelling to and fro to her college campus. She plans to utilize that time for her assignments and self-study judiciously.
Monika had a tight deadline for paying the college fees and other GIC formalities. Based on the successful completion of these processes, she could apply for her visa. She had a short timeline for sorting these procedures. She approached other financial lenders but was unable to get her education financing within a short span of time. A friend informed Monika about Avanse Financial Services. She approached Avanse immediately, and within a week’s time, Monika’s study loan was sanctioned. She completed the visa application procedure within 10-15 days. She had a smooth and hassle-free experience with her education financing partner.
Students should be prepared to face any situation, be it positive or negative. When you travel to a new country away from your home, family, friends and relatives, you might feel homesick at times. Do not think of quitting. Stay strong and be optimistic. You should have confidence in yourself. Always remember that you can do it. This positive and optimistic attitude will help you achieve your goal. With regards to research, please do your own research. Do not blindly depend on someone else’s judgement.
