One major reason why so many students wish to pursue their MS in Computer Science from McGill University is that this university offers great research centres as well as several courses to study from. There are different areas in which the research work is conducted. These areas are theory, applications, and systems.
Students focusing on theory study about computational geometry, graph theory, cryptography, combinatorial optimization, algorithms, logic and computation, quantum computing, scientific computing, and theory of computation.
The applications that students research on are computer animation, robotics, graphics, machine learning, bioinformatics, and vision.
The systems that students work on are distributed systems, modelling and simulations, networks, compilers, software engineering, embedded and real-time systems, and computer games.
There are different courses that you can opt for in Computer Science. These are M.Sc. in Computer Science (Thesis), M.Sc. in Computer Science (Non-Thesis), M.Sc. in Computer Science (Bioinformatics), M.Sc. in Computer Science, Ph.D. in Computer Science, and Ph.D. in Computer Science (Bioinformatics).
Now that you know about the courses, let us learn about the admission criteria of the university and the requirements for the application process:
In order to pursue a Master’s degree in Computer Science, you will have to at least have a bachelor’s degree with a minimum CGPA of 3.2 out of 4.0.
When it comes to applying for a Ph.D. in Computer Science, you will have to have an MS in Computer Science or any closely related field of study. This degree should be pursued from a reputed university. But there are also exceptional cases where students with a great academic record can directly apply for a Ph.D., but they still have to initially apply for a Master’s degree. At the end of their first academic year, they can get promoted to a Ph.D. upon approval of the Ph.D. committee.
The application process is not a hassle as you have to complete it online. Apart from the usual academic documents, here are some additional requirements that the university requires:
• Statement of purpose (M.Sc. & Ph.D.)
• CV (M.Sc. & Ph.D.)
• GRE test
There are two terms during which the university accepts applications. The first term’s opening date is the 15th of February, and the second term’s opening date is the 15th of September. Please note that the second term is only for Ph.D. applications.
