According to the recent research conducted by IDP connect, an educational guidance company, Canada has emerged to be the top study-abroad destination. It states that one-third of the students aspire to study in Canada, making it the most preferred country for international students.

So, let’s understand the higher education system in Canada, which plays a vital role in attracting study-abroad students.

1. Study levels

The provincial government manages education, not the federal government. The Indian education system has five levels – primary, secondary, higher secondary, graduation, and post-graduation. The education system in Canada has pre-elementary, primary education, secondary and post-secondary levels. You can acquire higher education through Certification & Diploma Courses, Bachelor’s Degree Courses, Bachelors’ Degree Honours, Post-graduate Diplomas, Master’s Degrees, PhD and Post-Doctoral Programs.

2. Academic year

The education system in Canada has fall intake which begins around August or September and winter intake, which begins around December or January. Some universities also offer summer intake, which starts around April or May.

3. Courses and duration

The education system in Canada empowers students by offering an extensive range of study programs meant to suit the varied needs of the student fraternity. Here are some of the course types offered by most of the Canadian institutions:

Certification and Vocational Programs: These courses can range between 6 months and 2 years, which are mainly technical courses for specific domain specializations. You can acquire job-specific skills to be career-ready post completion of your course.

Bachelor’s Degree Programs: The duration of these degree programs could be 3 to 4 years depending on university, course, province, etc.

Bachelors’ Degree (Honours): This degree course allows you to select your preferred area of specialization for a duration of 4 years.

Post-graduate Diploma: You can opt for this program for academic or vocational courses. The duration of this study program is usually up to 2 years.

Master’s Degree: This degree program allows you to select your preferred area of specialization with a duration of 1-2 years.

PhD and Post-doctoral degrees: Students who intend to pursue doctoral or post-doctoral programs have to devote themselves to research in their area of interest by writing dissertations, research reports, etc. PhD programs can be for 4-7 years, and the post-doctoral programs have no specific course duration.

4. Educational Institutions in Canada

UniversitiesStudy abroad students can opt for undergraduate programs, post-graduate programs, diploma courses, professional study programs, and PhD courses through universities. Canadian STEM courses, Business Management, Arts, and Humanities are some of the courses that are popular among study abroad students.

University colleges: These universities offer diploma courses, bridge programs, university transfer programs, and more. So, these university colleges provide a small range of courses, unlike other mainstream universities that offer a plethora of courses.

Community/Public colleges: Community colleges are funded by the provincial government and are less expensive than regular universities. These colleges offer a wider range of courses, but the classrooms will have a higher student-faculty ratio. These universities provide associate degrees, undergraduate degrees, diploma courses, and more.

Technical and Career colleges: If you are interested in professional courses like IT, Hospitality, Graphic Designing, Business Management, etc., you can study in these colleges. You can select from certification courses, diploma courses, and more.
