Studying abroad is a dream that most of us wish for. Germany is one country that is considered to be a great education hub for students. With numerous universities that are ranked among the best in the world, studying in Germany gets students much better employment opportunities.
But academic qualification is not the only thing that the student has to think about. Finances are also a big part of the planning process where one has to prepare a budget to bear all the academic and non-academic expenses.
With Germany being one of the best places to get an education from, a common misconception is that the country would be way above budget. This, however, is not true, as students find Germany to be quite affordable as compared to other European countries.
To understand more about the expenses that a student would ideally incur, we have included things that the student would spend on:
The tuition fee of a university is the first thing that a student thinks about when it comes to pursuing a course abroad. In Germany, public universities charge no tuition fees at all. Isn’t that a great initiative by the German government?
Students going for private German universities would have to pay tuition fees, but this again differs from university to university. On average, students pay up to 26,000 EUR every year as semester fees at private German universities.
Students have to make arrangements for their stay before they start classes. Bigger cities like Frankfurt, Cologne, Hamburg and the capital Munich would cost a student a lot more when it comes to paying rent as compared to the more economic rent rates of cities like Karlsruhe and Leipzig.
Students can find one-bedroom apartments for rent lesser than 700 EUR in cities like Dusseldorf, Mainz, and Bonn. For those who can afford a higher rent, cities like Frankfurt, Hamburg, and Stuttgart have one-bedroom apartments for rent costing between the price range of 700-800 EUR. Most students share the apartment, thus dividing the rent among all the students living in the apartment.
An average meal for two at a restaurant would cost around 45 EUR. Students looking to save on these costs need not worry since most universities have cafeterias that have an extensive range of food at lower costs. The best way is to get in the kitchen and start working on your culinary skills which is a sure-shot way of saving funds.
Transportation is something that you as a student are going to spend on daily. This does not just involve the to and fro from your apartment to the university. There are many other reasons because of which you are going to spend on transportation, for instance exploring the city, going out for dinner with your group, and many other reasons. In such cases, your best alternative is to make use of the public transportation services.
