When you are planning to study overseas, choosing the right study abroad destination and the right course are the two most important decisions you need to make. Germany is one of the popular study abroad destinations. The presence of leading universities, a plethora of courses, affordable living costs, and endless career opportunities make it one of the best study abroad destinations around the globe.
Now, it’s time to decide on the right study program in Germany. With so many universities offering different courses, choosing the right one is a herculean task. But no need to fret; simply consider these factors that will help you in better decision-making.
Check interest level and career aspirations: First and foremost, you need to decide your area of interest and career aspirations. For instance, if you are interested in business administration and want to see yourself in a managerial position in the future, then go for courses like Master of Business Administration (MBA) or International Business.
Course prospect: After deciding your interest levels, think about whether you want to pursue an undergraduate or postgraduate degree. Based on your preferences, do extensive research on the courses. Check which courses align with your career and academic goals, their duration, admission requirements and application deadlines. After considering all these factors, narrow down the choices to a few.
Here is a list of popular disciplines available in Germany:
Important Note: You can easily avail an education loan for studying at a German university.
Career prospect: The main goal of studying any course is to build a successful career. So, check the career options you can pursue after completing your preferred course. For instance, Germany is one of the best study abroad destinations for pursuing degrees in Management and Engineering due to the ever-growing demand for skilled professionals in multiple industries. In case you are unsure about your career goal, at this point, self-introspection will help you a great deal. You can also choose from general degrees that can unlock myriad career prospects such as Public Relations, Psychology or Communications. Even if you are choosing a general degree, take a decision based on your interest level.
Selection of university: Now, look for the university. In Germany, three kinds of universities exist: University (offering highly theoretical and research-oriented study programs), University of Applied Sciences (offering study programs focusing on practical knowledge), and Colleges of Art, Film, and Music (offering admissions to candidates with artistic talents). Check about the universities offering your preferred course and the institute’s rankings. The top 5 German universities are as follows:

Technical University of Munich (TUM) |
50 |
Heidelberg University |

Language test: Aptitude for the desired course and language proficiency are two factors assessed by universities while shortlisting candidates. The aptitude tests may vary depending on the courses, but the language requirements are similar for most study programs. For taking admission into English-taught courses in German universities, you need to clear one of the following language proficiency tests; IELTS or TOEFL.
If you choose German-taught programs, prove your proficiency in the German language by clearing any of the two German Language Tests: TestDAF (Test of German as a Foreign Language) and DSH (Deutsche Sprachprüfung für den Hochschulzugang).
Important Note: Besides language proficiency tests, there are certain course-specific requirements that international students need to fulfil. So, check with your university before proceeding with the application process.
Mode of study: You can pursue higher education in Germany either by joining part-time or full-time courses. Part-time courses will help you to continue your job and are less expensive than full-time courses. However, a sea of job opportunities will open if you pursue a full-time course. Indeed, studying a full-time course in Germany is an expensive proposition but taking an education loan is one of the best ways to finance your higher education independently.
Financial viability: Once you have decided on the course, the university and the mode of study, it’s time to determine the total cost of your preferred course. Consider all study-related expenses, including accommodation costs, while calculating the total cost of studying abroad. Do you find it affordable? No need to be disappointed if the total cost of the course is not falling within your budget. You can take loans to study abroad that will provide financial support by covering a majority of education-related expenses.
