GRE 2024: An exam overview

GRE is a computer-adaptive, multiple-choice exam and is considered an important admission criterion for seeking admission to graduate and other business programs worldwide. The popularity of the exam has increased in the last few years as the majority of top-ranked universities have started accepting the GRE score for several study programs. What you must know about the Graduate Record Exam?

General and Subject are two kinds of GRE:

  • GRE General Test:

    It measures quantitative reasoning, verbal reasoning, analytical writing, and critical thinking skills of students that have been developed over time and are not specific to any particular field of study. Being a computer-adaptive test, it allows candidates to respond to questions in any sequence, skip any question, go back, and change answers within a section.

The total duration of the exam is 1 hour and 58 minutes. The GRE General Test is available at over 1,000 test centres across 160 countries. The test pattern is as follows:

  • GRE Subject Test:

    This test examines candidates’ skills and knowledge in a particular study area, such as Mathematics, Physics, and Psychology. From September 2023, this exam will be computer-based. The total duration of the Mathematics exam is 2 hours and 50 minutes, whereas 2 hours is the duration of the Physics and Psychology tests each. The test pattern is tabulated below:

GRE exam eligibility

As per the ETS, there are no specific GRE eligibility criteria.

There are no specific GRE eligibility criteria for Indian students. However, candidates must produce their original passports as identity proof at the exam centre. Therefore, they must have a valid passport before appearing for the GRE.

  • Age limit for GRE :

    No specific age limit is set for candidates willing to appear for the GRE test.

GRE exam qualification

There has been no official statement from the ETS regarding the GRE 2024 qualification. However, you are expected to possess a bachelor’s degree from a recognised university if seeking admission to master’s degree programs.

Online GRE test dates

You can take the GRE General Test once every 21 days and the GRE Subject Test once every 14 days. You can take the test up to 5 times within a rolling 12-month period. It is advised to check the official website of the ETS to get accurate details about the online GRE test dates. For instance, if you are planning to appear for fall 2024, the ideal time to appear for the exam is April to June 2024.

GRE Exam cost

The GRE General test costs INR 22,500, whereas the Subject test costs INR 14,500. You can make payments by debit cards, credit cards, UPI, or by digital wallet.
