His Network – Backbone of His Research

Many of Vinay’s friends live abroad, and he leveraged his network to get insights into various universities, campus experiences, countries, cultures, and people. Considering all the aspects, he was left with three options to study abroad - the US, the UK, and Australia. After carefully evaluating the budget, job opportunities, student-friendliness and economic conditions, he chose to head to the UK.

In addition to this, he approached education consultancies to apply to multiple universities. He was selected by more than 6 universities in the UK. He relied on various ranking platforms to determine the pedigree of the universities and select the right one for him. Furthermore, he checked the university websites to understand the coursework, fees, etc.

His Student Visa Experience

He confidently stated that his student visa application process was seamless, and he faced no issues. When applying for a visa, he thoroughly examined the application to avoid any mistakes which can lead to unnecessary complications. Vinay’s student visa arrived in just 5 days.

The UK student visa will allow you to stay for 2-5 years, depending on your course. You can visit the UK’s official government website and create a UK Visas and Immigration (UKVI) account to apply for a visa. You will have to upload all the necessary documents, including your passport, proof of funds, photographs, ID proofs, etc. Later, you will be called for a visa interview. Ideally, you will get the decision within 3 weeks.

English Proficiency Exams and Entrance Tests

Study abroad aspirants will have to appear for English language exams to prove that they can understand the English-taught study programmes. Some widely accepted exams are the International English Language Testing System (IELTS) and the Test of English as a Foreign Language (TOEFL). Additionally, you will also have to appear for entrance exams such as Graduate Record Examinations (GRE) or Graduate Management Admission Test (GMAT). According to Vinay, some universities waive these exams. So, it is best to check the university-specific requirements.

Role of SOP and LOR

Statement of Purpose (SOP) is an essay capturing your academic journey, achievements, extra-curricular activities, and short-term goals, to name a few. It allows the university moderator to evaluate your student profile from the sea of applications. Whereas a letter of Recommendation (LOR) covers the perspective of your professor or faculty member outlining your qualifications, academic progress, skills, etc. Vinay’s education consultant guided him in drafting engaging SOP and LOR.

So, this is all about Vinay’s research mechanism, student visa experience, English proficiency exams & entrance tests, and the role of SOP and LOR. In the next episode, we will cover the difference in pedagogy, his experience with the new environment, and how he embraced the new culture.
