Academic performance is measured using scoring systems such as percentages, Grade Point Average (GPA), Semester Grade Point Average (SGPA) and Cumulative Grade Point Average (CGPA). SGPA and CGPA are popular methods of evaluating students. So, let’s understand them better and learn how SGPA is converted to CGPA.

Key Highlights

  • SGPA full form
  • What is SGPA?
  • What is CGPA

SGPA full form
Although SGPA’s full form is Semester Grade Point Average, it is also known as Sessional Grade Point Average.

What is SGPA?
Before diving into converting SGPA to CGPA, let’s first understand what SGPA is. It is the average of the grade points earned throughout a particular session, such as a semester or entire academic year. SGPA is considered on a 10-point scale.

What is CGPA
CGPA is the total marks, or the cumulative marks scored for the entire academic year or for a particular semester. CGPA is calculated basis SGPAs of different semesters, and hence, SGPA and CGPA are different scoring systems.

How is SGPA calculated

Let’s understand the calculation of SGPA using the following illustration

Sr. No.

Name of the subject

Credit score

Grade points

1

Data Structure and Algorithms

4

9

2

Business Fundamentals

2

8

3

Data Collection

3

8

4

Probability and Statistics

2

7

Total

11

Step 1: Each subject’s credit score must be multiplied by the grades achieved.

  • Data Structure and Algorithms – 4 x 9 = 36
  • Business Fundamentals – 2 x 8 = 16
  • Data Collection – 3 x 8 = 24
  • Probability and Statistics – 2 x 7 = 14

Step 2: Add the above scores

  • Data Structure and Algorithms = 36
  • Business Fundamentals  = 16
  • Data Collection = 24
  • Probability and Statistics = 14
  • Total points = 36 + 16 + 24 + 14 = 90

Step 3:

  • Divide the total by the sum of credit scores

SGPA = Total points earned in the semester/Credit scores of the semester
So, in this example, SGPA = 90/11 = 8.18

SGPA to CGPA conversion
Once you have the SGPA, it is easy to calculate CGPA.
CGPA = Total of SGPAs of all the semesters/number of semesters
Let’s understand this with an example too. Let’s say, in one academic year, there are two semesters. The SGPA of the first semester is 9, and the SGPA of the second year is 8.
So, CGPA = (9 + 8)/2 = 8.5

SGPA to percentage
Let’s understand the conversion of SGPA to percentage with an example. For instance, your SGPA for the first and second semesters is 9 and 8, respectively.

  • Step 1: Add the SGPA for each semester – 9 + 8 = 17
  • Step 2: Add the total by the number of semesters = 17/2 = 8.5
  • Step 3: Multiply the above number by 10, then subtract it by 7.5. The answer will be the percentage.

So, it will be calculated as (8.5 x 10) – 7.5 = 77.5%

If you want to save time and avoid mental math, you can use online calculators too. All you have to do is enter the information such as credit scores, grades, number of subjects etc., and let the calculator do the work. You will get the answers in a few seconds.

Don’t let the SGPA, CGPA and GPA confuse you
Now that you know the difference between SGPA and CGPA, let’s understand how different they are from Grade Point Average GPA.

  • In your academic year, you will be awarded grade points for each subject basis your performance. Your grader will assign a credit when you use the credit hours up to their satisfaction. Your GPA will be calculated by multiplying your grade points by the credit scores of each subject. The total GPA is the average that students get for one particular semester.
  • On the other hand, SGPA is calculated for the semester or a particular academic year.
  • To calculate CGPA, you will need SPGAs for all the semesters, and CGPA gives you the cumulative score for the entire session.

So, we hope this information helps you convert your SGPA to CGPA. International universities follow their own grading systems, but you can now convert the scores based on your educational institution’s requirements.
